Health Care Reform - Summary of Benefits and Coverage Requirement - Effective March 23, 2012    

According to a new Affordable Care Act regulation issued on August 22nd, 2011 health plans will be required to provide a Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) for each health plan. This requirement is in an effort to provide consumers with more straightforward and easy-to-understand information regarding their healthcare options so that they can easily compare and choose the best plan for their needs.

These documents will need to be provided to each plan participant and beneficiary free of charge and will include:

    A Summary of Benefits and Coverage that will explain more in layperson's terms the more pertinent details of the plan such as a concise description of the coverage, exceptions or limitations, contact information, and total cost of the plan.

    A glossary of commonly used terms related to health insurance

Beginning on March 23, 2012, an issuer or health plan will need to automatically provide a Summary of Benefits and Coverage to consumers prior to enrolling in coverage and 30 days prior to reissuance or renewal of their health coverage.
